“Styling a few celebrities you might know…” is the introduction to the Chicago native and celebrity stylist Instagram page of Marcus Ivory.

Within the past few years Marc Ivory has racked up quite a styling roster with celebrities, publications, commercial clientele and a few videos as well.

And this particular day was no exception to the rules as we kicked off our interview via mobile with Marc Ivory informing me of how elated he was to work with long time client Angie Martinez once again.

As he verbally made mental notes about fittings with Angie, and wardrobe pulling for upcoming photo shoots while making a stop at his apartment in Central Harlem to take his dog for a walk and back out the door for his next appointment… The life of a stylist is never dull or done.

RowASeat1 x Celebrity Fashion Stylist Marcus Ivory gabs it up with fashion talk about his breakthrough moment in the industry and some tips about how to survive as a stylist – Get the deets on the interview below.

RowASeat1: When did you fall in love with fashion?

Marcus Ivory: While I was in high school I fell in love with fashion indirectly. I use to pick up items from H&M and make hoodies for my peers and classmates. Then I heard about this contest with True Star Magazine, so I entered it and I won.

At that point I went on to Columbia College Chicago and majored in Fashion Design, but halfway through college I decided to leave and I started working at Ford Models Chicago, then I got bored with that and I wanted more so I moved to New York to intern for Catherine Malandrino.

After one month as an intern, I was hired full-time and I learned so much about the industry, I felt as if I was in too deep (on the corporate side) and eventually I made my exit and decided to work for myself.

RowASeat1: Name a few celebrities you’ve styled.

Marcus Ivory: I’ve worked with the following: Angie Martinez, Adrienne Bailon, Nia Long, Elle Varner, Tyrese, Zendaya Coleman, Nick Cannon and etc. I’ve also worked with several major brands like Target, Sears & Roebuck and Nike.

RowASeat1: Which stylists do you admire and why?

Marcus Ivory: I would have to start with June Ambrose because her spirit is amazing, her energy and presence is contagious and her style is effortless. Secondly, Law Roach… I love, love, love his hustle. He’s an awesome guy and I love how he pulls from various places for inspiration to channel different style icons. Jason Rembert, his skills are on another level. Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn because they keep Jennifer Lopez on point all the time!

RowASeat1: Go-To Labels for your clients.

Marcus Ivory: Honestly, it depends upon that particular client, however, these are a few of my absolute favorites: Phillip Lim, Givenchy, Theory, and Urban Outfitters.

RowASeat1: Advice for upcoming stylists.

Marcus Ivory: It’s a lot to do what you love doing and for people to truly support you. Practice. Practice. Practice. Surround yourself with like minds; everything I did was with stylists. Love enough and NEVER be jealous of someone’s project, client or career. People should love more. Be positive. Remember, you get what you focus on!
