Row A Seat 1: When did you fall in love with fashion?

Chiquita Carey of Truvanity: Around 1991, we moved to the Southside of Chicago in an apartment upstairs from my cousin Jennifer, and Jennifer was the epitome of a 90’s ‘around the way girl.’ From Coogi pieces to Nike tracksuits and a Coach, Dooney & Burke or MCM bag to match every outfit. I remember telling my mom “I am not going to have any kids, so I can buy all the purses to match my clothes every day like Jennifer.” (Laughs)

Row A Seat 1: My personal style is…

Chiquita Carey: (Laughs) I hate this question because it’s so hard to narrow it down. I can start by what my personal style is not and that is over the top or wild. I always look ‘put together,’ complete if you will. I dress in scenes….

House Party: Fly kicks, jeans, and a cool tee-shirt.
Work: Pencil skirt, tie neck blouse and a colorful pump and tights.
Hanging with the Girls: Off the shoulder ruffle dress and wedges.
Date Night: Anything to show these curves….lol.

Row A Seat 1: Define fashion vs style.

Chiquita Carey: Fashion is the tangible item, what you see on the mannequins or the racks. Your style is what you make with the fashion by adding your own “sauce” to it. People always are shocked when I let them know where I got an item from, and I always tell them ‘you can go get the piece, but it won’t look the same because our styles are different.’

Row A Seat 1: Which trends of SS17 are you looking forward to trying?

Chiquita Carey: I am looking forward to trying the silk pajama trend with an extra fabulous slide-in loafer, the DIY patchwork denim and the sock and sandal trend.

This is a work look, inspired by the ‘woman on the go.’ That woman would need to be comfortable and chic, hence the platform oxford (rose gold) and a semi-exaggerated collar on the top.

This look can be worn to work or out to dinner. I am so into playing with prints right now and that is why I chose camo and stripes, but then I said let me do a blush skirt. Blush is trending so I wanted to give my audience an idea of what they can do with a hint of blush.

This is a ‘running errand or sports event’ type of look, you want to be cute, yet comfortable. This look was expired by the DIY patchwork denim trend, I added all the patches myself.

The beaded jacket is making the statement for this look, so everything else had to be basic pieces. I would wear this to a fashion networking event because the jacket is a conversation starter.

Date night all the way! I’d been wanting to pair red and purple together for a while now, so when I saw the pants at JC Penney I thought it would be perfect for the lilac sweater I had at home.
