Alita Daniels of The Silly Simone: I fell in love with fashion when I was about 11 years old. I started paying more attention to it (fashion) and gaining my own style when I was in 10th grade. By senior year, I was illustrating some fabulous gals.
RowASeat1: Alita, tell me about the story behind your jewelry collection, The Silly Simone.
Alita: Silly Simone began on a whim. I actually needed something to wear for fashion week (2013). I knew I was going to my favorite designer’s fashion show (Betsey Johnson), and wanted to stand out a little. I was brainstorming. Trying to think of something I could create to wear. I had a vision in my head and attempted it. The day of the show I wore my creation to work first and was asked about it.
One lady in particular wanted my business card, but I told her that I had just made that piece for myself and it was my first time doing so. This lady looked me in my eyes and told me that I needed to keep making them. I took that as a sign from God and I made a few more. The shop I was working in decided to see how they would sell and Silly Simone took off from there. Just to name a few places, I’ve sold my pieces to people in Italy, China, Australia, and Norway.
RowASeat1: Since 2013, the underground success of The Silly Simone has caught the attention of several celebs – How was it seeing Erykah Badu rocking a Silly Simone piece?
Alita: I’m still in awe of Erykah Badu rocking my pieces. It was and still is surreal. I just keep telling myself – “Wow! Ms. Badu really loves my work!” I’m just so honored. Words can’t begin to express the joy I feel.
RowASeat1: What gives you inspiration to create your pieces?
Alita: I get that question a lot and I’m never too sure on how to answer it. My best attempt… My hands inspire the different styles that I come up with. I used to braid hair and depending upon the shape of one’s head, my fingers would move. It’s kind of the same with my neckpieces. My fingers take control. They just move wherever they want to go. I draw inspiration from seeing colors and patterns. I’ve always loved prints and colors. They inspire me most!
RowASeat1: Speaking of creating, your exclusive creations will now be on display in its new home in Brooklyn, USA (DUMBO). Share with our readers your incredible news.
Alita: Yes, Silly Simone will be opening up her own shop in (Dumbo) Brooklyn. Many people have wanted a place to see my work and so I decided to open up a shop. I did this to please my supporters. They speak and I try my best to listen. My grand opening will be on November 15th from 12-8pm. Silly Simone will be located inside the shops at 145 Front Street.
RowASeat1: How do you feel about your dreams coming true? Any tips for upcoming artists?
Alita: My dreams coming true has been one of the best feelings ever. I know it looks like it’s been easy and it happened overnight, but in actuality, I’ve had many business adventures. I used to be a purse designer and I did other accessories as well, but none took off like this. The best advice I can give to other artist is to never give up. I know it sounds like the thing to say, but honestly I just kept trying my hands at something and here I am nine years out of college and something has finally taken off for me. It’s never to late to go after your dreams.
RowASeat1: What can we expect from The Silly Simone brand in the next three years?
Alita: In the next three years, one can expect from Silly Simone a website. I know I’ve been putting it off for a while now, but I will have one. I also plan on moving into the apparel industry. Apparel was my first love. Lastly, Silly Simone will be sold somewhere outside of the U.S. I want to widen my audience.
