Besides fronting his exquisite taste for expensive sneakers and high-end frames – Style Maverick Mr. Dalwayswin aka D-Win, former member of the Hip Hop duo, The Rocketeers and ‘MTVU Woodie Award’ nominee is gearing up for the release of his latest EP, ‘Kubrick’ that’s inspired by the film work of Stanley Kubrick.
RowASeat1 checked in with the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago alumnus to talk music, style and his interesting background in the field of Retail/Merchandising… Take a seat and enjoy this haute interview!
RowASeat1: When did you fall in love with fashion?
D-Win: The 90s era inspired me the most. Watching sitcoms like: Martin, The Wayans Brothers, Saved By The Bell, and A Different World. It meant a lot going back to school with the fresher gear and the newest Jordan’s. Back when there was no Internet I can remember you had to watch the Chicago Bulls games just to see which shoes Michael was wearing on the court. Also, my Aunt Charlene had her own fashion boutique when I was a kid, and I liked seeing someone I looked up to with her own store. It really inspired me.
RowASeat1: I am …
D-Win: Visionary, designer, artist, rapper, stylist, merchandiser, and a jack-of-all-trades.
RowASeat1: Describe your personal style.
D-Win: It’s a mix of different elements together. Street wear, designer, vintage, classic, and I pull things from my favorite style icons. The combination of all of theses things is what makes me stand on my own. Accessories can change every thing; I never leave the house without at least two pair of sunglasses. I look at the weather app before getting dressed, which reflects my personal style.
D-Win: For me, a typical day is waking up and planning I’m always on the next move. I carry a notebook with me and I write down short and long term goals. I play both sides of the fence by being an artist in fashion.
I see things through a different lens. Getting ideas out of my head is the hardest thing, because I do a whole bunch of different things. I’m always working and while working I’m thinking on ways to improve a song or how to make a photo shoot better.
RowASeat1: Let’s talk about your new EP, Kubrick.
D-Win: I teamed up with my homie, TekHeartsYou. He produced the entire project – it’s a 5-song EP. The first single/video, Walking On Water is about to drop. Works of film director Stanley Kubrick inspired the project. It’s a new direction and sound for me. It’s going to release this summer.
RowASeat1: Tell me about your journey as a music artist.
D-Win: I started off in a duo called “The Rocketeers.” We toured around the world and performed shows from city-to-city. We were nominated for an MTVu Woodie award, and got a song licensed with MTV. In 2011, we both went on to pursue our solo careers.
I dropped my first tape my “Ode To Debonair.” I did some things with XXL magazine, performed at SXSW & A3C music festivals. Over the summer, I was part of the promo for the Nike Basketball Festival. It was dope to see photos of me all over the beach house and in the magazine. Up to speed now I’m prepping for the release of Kubrick with TekHeartsYou.
RowASeat1: How was your experience working with MTV?
D-Win: I received the call that they (MTV) wanted to use my song “Stupid Fresh” for an online web series called, Engine Room. It was dope because that song wasn’t even out that long and it picked up their attention. It was a dope experience because I always dreamed of being on MTV. I received the second call that they (MTV) wanted to use “Stupid Fresh” for an online video game called, Debt Ski it’s still up and the song is featured on the play list.
Then I got the fourth call that we, Johnny Rocket & Me, “The Rocketeers” were nominated for a MTVu Woodie award for “Best Music On Campus.” They also used my vocals for the intro of the award show and it aired on MTV. We lost the award, but it was a good experience and it showed me that I could really do this if I keep pushing.
RowASeat1: Name some artists who inspire you.
D-Win: Kanye, Pharrell, Jay-Z, Tyga, Drake, Lenny Kravitz, Teddy Riley, Sade, FKA Twigs, Timbaland, R. Kelly, Aaliyah, and that’s a few but it’s many more.
RowASeat1: Who are your favorite designers?
D-Win: Currently my favorites are: Jerry Lorenzo of Fear of God LA; Rob Garcia; Formerly of En Noir and Jon Buscemi of Buscemi.
RowASeat1: Which items are on your wish list?
D-Win: Celine Cuban Link Sunglasses, Louis Vuitton Millionaires Sunglasses, a Red BMW E30 M3, Yeezy Boost, Red Beeline x Timberland boots, TISA x MCM parka jacket, Buscemi screw back cap and a few hats from Lackofcolor.
