My first introduction to NAKIMULI was during NYFW this past September for the Essence Street Style Block Party at DUMBO. While strolling through the booths for some style inspiration I spotted the ‘Dark Khaki BBD Dress,’ which is one of the collection’s most popular pieces and I instantly feel in love with the silhouette and fabric of the dress.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to connect with the designer at the time, but I knew I’d eventually cross paths later on and thanks to Instagram I lucked up on the opportunity again.
And what better way than to feature this amazing line on the style blog, right? But, of course!
According to designer Tennille McMillan, NAKIMULI aims to go beyond the traditions of women’s fashion and explore more of the imagination, creating fashion forward garments for forward thinking young women. Inspired by color, shapes, and African/ethnic prints, NAKIMULI has created their own fashion revolution: one that embraces an awareness + love of self at any size, inspires sisterhood, individuality, comfort, and lots of fun. Be bold; become your own trendsetter. Dream. Explore. Dare.
Upon graduating with a BA in dance from Hunter College, the Brooklyn native decided to design instead of pursing her dreams of being a dancer. So, in 2009, NAKIMULI was birthed and with 29K+ Instagram followers and consistent SOLD OUT pieces later I’d say her ability, as a designer to move gracefully throughout the fashion industry has been quite interesting.
