Marching into the third month of the year with a beauty spotlight in Marie Claire, plus hosting a prom event sponsored by Macy’s has granted this Atlanta-based fashion blogger a reason to dream bigger.

Blogger Tameka

Upon graduating from Jackson State University, Tameka Brown, a Flint, MI native decided to try her hand in fashion by snagging a degree in Fashion Marketing & Design at AIU-Buckhead.

From there Tameka’s desire to fulfill her love for fashion rekindled during some “not-so creative” days while working a regular 9-to-5, and I’m sure this is something we all can attest too. Overwhelmed with this fashion void in addition to a sprinkle of faith sparked the birth of Tameka’s fashion blog, The Fashion Kuhlt!

With The Fashion Kuhlt as her platform Tameka wanted to showcase an array of her talents including: sewing lessons, tips on modeling, Fashion Marketing advice and becoming more active with her readers.

Of course RowASeat1 had to reach out to the beautiful lady behind Marie Claire’s fashion blogger spotlight to get the deets on everything from her OOTD selections to attending Atlanta’s most fashionable events. Make sure you visit the secret society for all things fashion – You won’t be disappointed!

RowASeat1: When did you fall in love with Fashion?

kuhlt-shoot-tulle-029Tameka Brown: I fell in love with fashion when I was maybe 8 or 9. I discovered while playing with my Barbie, that I had little wardrobe options. So I decided (being very creative and resourceful) to hand-stitch as many outfits I could think up.

We didn’t have much growing up, so I made Barbie all the cute little clothes my mom couldn’t afford to buy me. I was resourceful in that I used some of my favorite dresses or shirts from my mom’s closet as fabric. Needless to say a punishment or a whooping resulted from me fabric sourcing in my mother’s closets.

From that moment on I was turned onto all fashion had to offer; color, fabrics, the different types of fabric manipulations ruffles, flounces, pleats. I didn’t know at this age what fashion was, I knew I liked creating, I loved making shirts and pants and dresses for my dolls.

RowASeat1: What is The Fashion Kuhlt?

TB: The Fashion Kuhlt is my secret society for all things fashion. The name Kuhlt is the phonetic spelling of ‘cult,’ so it’s my dig at fashion for seemingly being so darn complicated. For me fashion has such a cult like following, people love fashion so much that they risk everything to be apart, they’ll move to New York in the hopes of breaking into the industry.

RowASeat1: Why blogging?

TB: Great question! I’ve been working a 9-to-5 for about two years, and about four months and I got bored. I have a degree in Fashion Marketing and Design and I’m sitting in a cubicle under florescent lights talking insurance mumbo jumbo, dressed like I’m working for a magazine, I became uninspired to say the least. So I thought maybe blogging can scratch my creative itch. I started blogging maybe 8months later, it was best thing I’ve ever done.

RowASeat1: Explain your goals for The Fashion Kuhlt?

TB: My goals for The Fashion Kuhlt are inspire people to be themselves in fashion and maximize their style without breaking the bank. Another goal is to establish my blog as a business and expand my blogging network.

RowASeat1: I love your OOTD posts!!! How do you select the looks for your readers?

TB: My OOTD posts are basically things I feel everyone should have in their closet. A killer leather jacket, sickening pair of booties, a sequin skirt, so I guess I’m teaching my readers with my outfits posts. I’m showing you how to have a complete closet with interchangeable, yet somewhat trendy pieces.

RowASeat1: Describe Tameka’s style.

TB: EASY + GLAM. I don’t make dressing up that fussy. I try to find one stand out piece and build from there.

RowASeat1: Which Fashion blogs do you frequent?

TB: Be Loud Be You, The Skinny Hipster, Fashion Bomb Daily. I love the first two, they are just my kinda style bloggers, you can’t be a fashion blogger and not follow Claire!

Marie Claire FeatureRowASeat1: Congratulations on your mention in Marie Claire! How did that come about? Describe the moment.

TB: I’ve been blogging less than a year, so I feel like everything is kind of falling in line for me. Marie Claire literally landed in my inbox out of nowhere. Got the email about the opportunity one day, the shoot ended up being on a Sunday. Went to the shoot and killed it, went right to church and praised God for the opportunity.  I had no idea I was chosen but to actually see your face in a magazine is like, “WOW, I’ve arrived”! Just kidding, but to have this opportunity kind of appear out of nowhere it just solidifies what I want to do with my blog.

RowASeat1: What will you do differently from fellow Fashion bloggers in Atlanta?

TB: This was the most difficult question for me to answer. I can only say I will continue to be true to myself I don’t really know how to be any other way. The things that people love about me are the things that make me unique and that alone will set me apart for other bloggers in Atlanta. My perspective on fashion, my approach to styling, my usage of color, is all different from other fashion bloggers in Atlanta because it’s ME.

RowASeat1: The Fashion Kuhlt is …

TB: ME, in every single way! I am the girly girl driven by color and patterns, who is completely all over the place at times (organized-confusion). Literally a gold Chevron print napkin can inspire me to want to redecorate my whole apartment. I’m insane … I obsess about things: colors, or patterns or certain pieces of clothing. One year I had a thing for vests; I’d ended up collecting like seven, who really needs SEVEN vests?!!!!

RowASeat1: I see you do a lot of thrifting, name your favorite thrift shops in ATL?

TB: I love thrifts stores they are like little pieces of heaven. Thrifts stores are filled with the most random things, from brass figurines to full length fur coats, I always score big when thrifting. Some of my favorites in Atlanta are: Rag-O-Rama, Park Avenue Thrift, The Value Village, and the mecca of thrift stores, The Salvation Army.

RowASeat1: What’s next for The Fashion Kuhlt?

TB: I’m approaching my 1 year blogiversary, I’m hoping to incorporate hosting shopping events with major retailers so that I can get out an meet some of my readers. Also keeping that momentum and excitement that I have already created in my blogging journey this far.

The Fashion Kuhlt is very stylish, cute and fun, but make sure you check it out here. Be sure to follow Tameka on FB: Tameka Brown and Twitter/IG: @thefashionkuhlt.
